People who know me, know that food and geography are my favorite subjects, so Not Just Tacos is the perfect book for me! It was written by Shirley Solis. Shirley, is from Ecuador, and she tells about the geography, people, customs, spices, and recipes in Latin American countries from Mexico to Argentina.
Shirley is also a mom with 6 kids and she homeschools like my Mom. So she really knows how to make the information in her cookbook interesting and fun for kids, as well as adults. It’s actually a cookbook the whole family can enjoy.
Every page has big, colorful photographs of food, people, or beautiful places. And the way she writes the information and recipes is simple, but not boring. When Shirley sent me her cookbook, I couldn’t wait to try one of the recipes! Honestly, they all look and sound DELICIOUS, so choosing which one to make first was a really tough decision.
I finally decided to make a recipe from Bolivia called the Pastel de Quinua, which to me is kinda like a Latin American Lasagna, using quinoa instead of lasagna noodles.
I was glad I chose this recipe because the ingredients were fresh, healthy, and had good flavors that inspired me to think of ways that I could make the recipe with different spices and ingredients of my own.
Being inspired to be creative is what I like best about cooking.
I want to try more of the recipes and learn more about the other countries that Shirley talks about in the cookbook.
And if you want to learn more about Latin America in a fun way and you love food, then you should really get a copy of Not Just Tacos!
