Making Reading Fun For Children Who Struggle With Comprehension
If you're like me and have a child who struggles with reading comprehension, here's a creative way to help them increase their skills in this area: Try films with subtitles!
Chase loves comedy, especially physical comedy. Rowan Atkins’ character “Mr. Bean” happens to be on his list of favorite comedians. When Chase received a copy of the movie, “Mr. Bean’s Holiday”, most of which happens to be spoken in French, he very quickly took to reading the subtitles and enjoyed that aspect of watching the film. The ability to see the characters acting out the words at the same time he was reading them, was a great way for Chase to be introduced to and comprehend new vocabulary; strengthen focus; as well as increase, expedite, and solidify retention of details.
This is also an excellent way to encourage kids to develop an interest in foreign languages! You can go online and find lists of family-friendly and kid-friendly foreign language films.
