I realized long ago that starting is creative and fun. The challenge is always to finish strong. Every Fall my kids and I are so excited to start up school, and activities together. There are new books, new classes, new sports, new dances to learn, and the promise of an adventurous year. We love the fresh uniforms, locations and experiences. As the year goes on, the fresh and new, slowly turns into the busy and routine. By spring we are catching the fever for summer. By May, all we want to do is be done with it all ! The lazy days of summer are calling out our name!
I don't know who is more excited to be finished...me or my kids. As much as we love our activities like dance and basketball, there is a freedom we long for that comes during summertime. This change in attitude is simply because we're tired. We have had to sustain a strenuous pace for an extended period of time. We deserve and need to rest. The reality is that we must stay the course, though.
As I tell my kids all the time it's all about finishing strong. When you persevere through the tough times is when you gain the strength, confidence and character to achieve greatness. We all know it's those last 10 sit ups that burn, that ultimately build the six pack that we are hoping to achieve. It's those late night study sessions during finals week that earn you the A grade for the semester. In this life, one of the most important things we can rolemodel and teach our kids is to finish strong. It's not all about winning. It is about doing your personal best. It's about giving something your all and feeling the satisfaction of knowing "you left it all on the field". Any sportsman knows that means you didn't hold anything back.
It is in these moments that win or lose, grade A or B, soloist or chorus line we can be proud of our accomplishment. So take a deep breath, splash water on your face and go finish strong!
